After seeing our Billie Review, Athena Club was kind enough to send me a few of their products to try out. We’re breaking down our findings in this Billie vs Athena razor subscription comparison. Though Athena sent us these products for free, we always give our most honest opinion in any product review. Hope this helps!
Billie vs Athena Razor Subscription
Let’s break down the differences in Billie vs Athena razor subscriptions. Both Billie and Athena Club are geared towards women, and both deliver an aesthetically pleasing, luxury experience. However, there are a few notable differences.
Price
When it comes to the price of Billie vs Athena razor subscriptions, both companies are very similar. In fact, their starter kits appear nearly identical. Prices can always change, but as of today, here is what is included in each starter kit for $9.
Athena Starter Kit ($9)
- One razor handle
- Two five-blade cartridges
- One wall mount holder (magnetic)
Billie Starter Kit ($9)
- One razor handle
- Two five-blade cartridges
- One wall mount holder (magnetic)
Seems straightforward enough, right? While the starter kits appear nearly identical, there are a few differences in the prices of other key products by Billie and Athena. The price for 4 refill blades from Athena (roughly 2 months’ worth) is $12, while 4 refill blades from Billie is $9. In addition, the Cloud Shave Foam from Athena is $9, while the Billie Shave Cream is listed for $8. The Athena website estimates that the Cloud Shave Foam should last roughly two months, while the Billie website estimates the
to last 1 month.
Billie vs Athena Handle
When it comes to comparing Billie vs Athena handles, I notice a difference right away. Athena Club’s razor handle feels much more substantial — like metal — while Billie’s feels more like hollow plastic. (I’m not sure if it’s hollow or not, but it sure feels light!) I enjoy the weightier feel of Athena Club’s razor handle much more. I also love the rubbery, gummy feel of Athena Club’s handle. It is easier to grip, and feels better on the fingers.
Aesthetics
Billie and Athena razor subscriptions offer a beautiful, luxury aesthetic experience. Both companies clearly dedicate a lot of time & effort towards an aesthetically pleasing experience for their customers. In my opinion, Athena Club offers a slightly more modern approach to razors and self care, while Billie’s leans a bit more whimsical. I am so glad that Athena Club offers a black razor, as well as a white one.
One of my chief complaints about Billie was that the only razor color options were bright colors such as periwinkle, orange, pink, and red. While it creates fun branding, it’s the total opposite of the aesthetic I try to create in our calming, earthy bathroom. Fortunately, Athena Club offers a matte black razor handle, which blends in beautifully with our black tile shower. In addition, they offer a white razor handle, which I imagine would blend in with the majority of showers across the globe. This is a huge plus, in my book.
Billie vs Athena on Sensitive Skin
When it comes to Billie vs Athena on sensitive skin, it’s hard to see much of a difference. After using Billie for over a year, I’ve now had Athena Club for a few months. I use Athena Club’s Cloud Shave Foam with each shave. With either Billie or Athena razors, I do not necessarily have to apply lotion after a fresh shave. This is even with sensitive skin! This is the major reason that I quit store-bought razors for good. Of course, my skin always feels best if I do apply lotion after shaving. However, with both Athena Club and Billie, I can get away without it.
Shave Cream & Extras
Billie vs Athena “extras” don’t overlap with every product, but they do each offer their own product for use with the razor. I have used both Athena’s Cloud Shave Foam and Billie’s Shave Cream. I prefer Athena’s Cloud Shave Foam for a couple reasons.
- It’s easier to get a complete shave with the Shave Foam. Billie’s Shave Cream is more translucent, so it’s harder to see where you’ve already shaved and where you have not. The Shave Foam, however, makes it obvious.
- It lasts longer. It takes me about 1.5 months to go through a bottle of Billie Shave Cream, while the Cloud Shave Foam from Athena is still going strong.
Athena Club was also kind enough to send us their “All Day Deo” deodorant to try out. I’m a pretty loyal lover of Native Deodorant, but I do love the All Day Deo as well. The smells are new to me, but it seems to work just as well as Native Deodorant in terms of preventing body odor. (However, I did end up getting Covid-19. My sense of smell still isn’t 100%, so it’s hard to be totally sure in that department!)
Athena Razor Review In Summary
All in all, I am happy that I switched from Billie to Athena Club razor subscription, and I will continue to buy their products with my own money after the samples run out. Below are the main reasons I’m so happy to switch to Athena Club.
Athena Razor Pros
- No/low skin irritation after shaving
- Neutral color options available (I love the black!)
- Higher quality handle
- Foaming shave cream is a huge plus
- Balanced handle design
- I can set the razor down on the counter without the head touching the counter, which prevents a mess. This was another major critique in my Billie Razor Review.
- Smaller shave head means a more accurate shave and less patches missed.
Athena Razor Cons
- Slightly smaller blades & shave head
- The increased precision means it takes a few more swipes to shave your legs. The trade-off is a few seconds added to the shave routine.
- Single-use wall mount does not come with extra adhesive in case it falls off.
- This may be an unnecessary critique since our Athena wall mount has never come off the wall, while our Billie mount fell off the wall numerous times.
