A little over a year ago, I got this new face wash in my FabFitFun box. It had a pretty blue bottle, and I recognized it from various influencers who’d shared it on their Instagram stories. Of course, their Tula skincare review was all sponsored, but my interest was piqued enough to give it a try. Within the first few washes, I fell in love with the Tula purifying face cleanser. I loved it enough that when my first bottle ran out, I went online to order more. Having used the product for over a year now, I want to offer this brutally honest Tula skincare review. As usual, this review is unsponsored, so I can be completely transparent. However, if you use our affiliate links below to purchase products, we may earn a small commission, which helps us keep the blog running. I love the product, but there are both pros and cons in this Tula skincare review.
Tula Skincare Pros
- Firms & Brightens Instantly
- Probiotics
- Natural Ingredients
Tula Skincare Cons
- Limited availability in stores
- Lacks customizable options
- Significant price tag/doesn’t last long
I’m here to break it all down a bit more in this Tula skincare review.
Tula Skincare Review: The Good
Here is what I loved about the Tula Skincare products, and the Purifying Face Cleanser, specifically. This is part of the Tula 3 Step Bundle that I buy.
Firms & Brightens Skin Instantly
In a world of exaggerated claims, I’m one of those people turned off by the word “instantly”. Especially when it comes to skincare. I think it’s pretty standard to expect to have to wait at least 30-60 days for results. However, I really did see a difference right away when it came to the Tula Purifying Face Cleanser. The post-wash dryness that I typically associate with face wash just wasn’t there. I also felt a noticeable freshness that I hadn’t ever felt with a face wash before. I think I noticed the pleasant smell most with the first wash, and by the second & third washes I noticed a difference in my skin.
Probiotics For Your Skin
Infusing skincare with probiotics is a relatively new phenomenon. To be perfectly transparent? I haven’t personally seen any scientific studies that indicate a significant difference in skin health or vibrance due to probiotics. It could all be a marketing scheme. However, I have to point out in this Tula skincare review that the noticeable difference is there. Tula claims that the probiotics help your skin “lock in moisture”. Theoretically, since probiotics are supposed to be good for the gut, they should be good for the skin too, right? It’s a novel concept, and if nothing else, makes me feel good about what I’m putting on my face.
Natural Ingredients
I’m all about the “natural ingredient movement” when it comes to food, so I’m all about it when it comes to skincare, too. Probably the best part of this Tula skincare review is the fact that the ingredients are naturally-sourced and easy to understand. This applies to Tula’s Purifying Face Cleanser, for sure. Now, there are some more “foreign” sounding ingredients in other skincare products they sell, so make sure to read up on those if that’s one of your concerns. However, below is what makes up their Purifying Face Cleanser.
- Lactic Acid
- Chicory Root
- Tumeric Root
- Blueberries
- Probiotics
Not too chemical-sounding, eh? (Is that an adjective? It is now!) I feel good about what I’m putting on my skin now, especially compared to the random wash I used before. Tula is also 100% cruelty free, which is absolutely required. We won’t consider any beauty product that utilizes animal testing of any kind.
Tula Skincare Review: The Bad
Every product has its pros and cons, and this Tula skincare review is no exception. Although I absolutely love the Tula skincare line, here are some factors to consider before diving in head-first.
Limited In-Store Availability
If you pick up your skincare from the local grocery store or pharmacy, get ready for a bit of a change. As far as I’ve read, the only retailer that carries Tula skincare is Ulta. This is significant especially now, because timely shipping isn’t exactly reliable as of late. (*cough* Coronavirus *cough*) It’s understandable given the circumstances, but it does mean that your skincare routine could be thrown off a bit. Tula does offer a small discount for ordering through their subscription service, so I’d probably only use Ulta as a last-ditch effort. I almost needed to do exactly this, when my last order took about 2 months to arrive amidst all the craziness. And considering their Purifying Face Cleanser is sold out on the Tula website at the moment I’m writing this… ruh roh…
Lacks Customization
In the same way that I’ll point out when I don’t know of scientific studies to support my “pros”, I don’t know of any scientific studies to support the “con” in the lack of customization. Perhaps it isn’t necessary. Part of this Tula skincare review is that the line doesn’t seem to offer different versions of products for oilier skin vs drier skin. This is surprising, considering that personal care startups seem to be moving more towards the direction of customization. Huge movements are being founded on companies producing hair products, bras, even vitamins which are carefully curated after answering a few simple questions online. It surprises me that Tula doesn’t offer product variations for oilier vs drier skin. I have found that my skin tends to be oilier while using Tula. This might just be the “dewey” look that everyone keeps hashtagging, but I could personally do with a little less. 😉
They do have quite a few products other than their daily face care collection, so I assume someone with more “girl stuff” knowledge would know which products to use to achieve the best results for a given skin type. However, the less digging I have to do to figure it out, the better!
It’s Not Cheap
It wouldn’t be a brutally honest Tula skincare review if I didn’t mention the price. The price isn’t outrageous — there are definitely skincare products that retail for more. However, at about $30/bottle — and that bottle goes fast — it’s a factor to consider. In the past, I’ve had drugstore skincare products that lasted me months. Maybe it’s just because I use this product more than the others — but I don’t find that one bottle of cleanser lasts more than 45 days. If you want the bundle of wash, toner, and moisturizer, you’re looking at spending right around $100. A hundred smacks every month or two adds up quickly to over a grand a year.
For healthy skin and quality hygiene, I’ll pay it.
Honest Tula Skincare Review, In Summary
If it wasn’t clear before, I really do love my Tula skincare products. However, like Ruggable and Ritual Vitamins, the company puts out a lot of heavily sponsored reviews, and I have yet to hear a sponsored review mention a single con. This honest Tula skincare review isn’t meant to turn you off of the product. As I mentioned, I continue to use it. However, hopefully it helps you weigh some pros and cons in your consideration!
Have you tried the Tula skincare line? What do you think of it? If not, what are your favorite skincare products?
